In this module we will examine how the concept of \"metaverse\" has evolved and in particular we will highlight the main trends and opportunities by analysing its 3 main pillars: Gaming,\nVirtual & Mixed Reality, Web3 Virtual Worlds.\nAll this will be accompanied by exemplifying case studies and hands-on activities analysing some of most famous “metaverses” in which millions of users or just a few early adopters are already meeting everyday living their parallel lives, actively participating in real economies of the size of small nations IRL (in-real-life).\nFinally, we will see where the metaverse is likely heading towards taking a look at a few of the most promising technologies and trends such as Augmented Reality, AI-augmentation of human capabilities and web3 technologies.\n\nThe following topics will be addressed in this module:\n1. What is the Metaverse and how it is evolving:\nWe will see how and when the “Metaverse” was first mentioned and how it has evolved, decomposing it into its 3 fundamental elements: Gaming, Virtual and Mixed Reality, Virtual Worlds Web3-based.\n\n2. Gaming - Metaverse’s foundations:\n12 million people followed Travis Scott’s concert on Fortnite in 2019 (source:Wired) making it the largest concert in the world. Around the same year, Fortnite's Fashion Industry was declared to be making as much money as Amazon (source:NYMag). Most recently in 2021 the Gaming Industry revenues have surpassed the film and music industry revenues combined (source:BBC). We will analyse the first real boom of “gaming” metaverses and see how these worlds have created an economy that now alone generates more\nrevenues than some nations.\n\n3. Virtual & Mixed Reality - the biggest technology bet ever:\n$70 Billion is the estimated investment in VR by Meta (formerly Facebook) until 2026 - making it the Biggest Technology Bet ever (source:TheInformation). Meta is also building a Virtual World called Horizon Worlds where creators can create worlds, earn money and anyone can have fun & participate to events.\nWe will understand why Meta has decided to invest such large amounts of money, looking at how Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR) are changing the concept of immersiveness and pushing towards experiences so far unimaginable for both consumers and businesses. We will explore more in-depth concepts such as Avatar, In-world Cosmetic, Digital Twin and Branded World.\n\n4. Web3 Virtual Worlds - real economies in virtual worlds:\nIn December 2021 someone paid $450.000 to be Snoop Dogg’s neighbour in The Sandbox - one of the most hyped web3 virtual worlds (source:Fortune). Since then, the Market for Metaverse Virtual Land and assets has been attracting huge risky bets as reported also by Bloomberg. Most recently, Ozzy Osbourne amongst other rockstars performed at Decentraland’s Metaverse Music Festival, which was organised right after the Metaverse Fashion Week.\nWe will understand how thanks to web3 technologies we are witnessing the birth and evolution of virtual worlds in which you can participate in a real economy, for example buying/selling or exchanging NFT representing Virtual Lands, cosmetic items for your avatars or just new avatars to be used for different occasions and different worlds.\nAmong other topics we will also analyse the new Play-to-earn trend related to web3- based virtual worlds\nwith strong gaming roots.\n\n5. The future of the metaverse:\nWhat do we imagine in the near future for the metaverse? We will explore the current and future impact of some of the most promising technologies emerging in the field such as Augmented Reality, AI-augmentation of human capabilities and web3 technologies.\nWe will dissect the future vision of large-scale tech enterprises such as Microsoft, Accenture, IBM and Meta - mixing it with insights on from science fiction. Through these lenses we will try to point at the direction where the metaverse might go in the future.","_id":"649076e86a2603493f8be89a"}],"revoked":false,"extensions:recipientProfile":{"@context":"https://openbadgespec.org/extensions/recipientProfile/context.json","type":["Extension","extensions:RecipientProfile"],"name":"Gabriele Nargi"}}
