Develop understanding of the purpose, process, structure and expectations of a successful dissertation (3rd year)\n\n2. To be able to conduct a literature search via library databases and relevant online sources.\n\n3. To begin to understand how to critique and synthesize research (literature review)\n\n4. Develop an understanding of the major epistemological perspectives in research (quantitative, qualitative)\n\n5. To understand how to describe, paraphrase and properly cite research literature and prevent plagiarism.\n\n6. To write successful draft (3-4 page) of a possible dissertation topic that includes the purpose, guiding questions, rationale, literature review, the significance of the study/report, and a reference list using proper citation guidelines.\n\n7. To understand how to give an effective research presentation.\n\nThe primary purpose of this course is to help students develop a better understanding of how to write a dissertation (3rd year) or a report. More specifically, the course will provide an overview of the dissertation guidelines and process, relevant skills (e.g, database search, critiquing and reviewing literature), research orientations (quantitative, qualitative) and the importance of how to reference literature. This course is explicitly designed for students to begin to understand the dissertation process (3rd year students,) and directly engage in writing drafts of part of the dissertation introduction.\n\nPedagogically this seminar involves interactive lectures and the opportunity to work collaboratively in small groups.
